Nanterre, France – February 6, 2025 – A 29-year-old Congolese migrant, Ali Gandega, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for a series of rapes committed in July 2022, targeting society’s most vulnerable. His victims included two elderly hospital patients, aged 70 and 78, and a 12-year-old girl he attacked in her own home.

The assaults began at Max-Fourestier Hospital in Nanterre, where Gandega raped two elderly patients within 30 minutes. Two days later, he broke into an apartment, strangled a young girl, and sexually assaulted her repeatedly before fleeing.

Gandega, a homeless, undocumented migrant, later admitted to the crimes without remorse, telling police he was “obliged” to rape because he had no girlfriend. Investigators also linked him to a failed attack on a 16-year-old girl just before the hospital rapes.

He evaded capture for over a month and was only arrested by chance at Gare de Lyon, where he was caught committing fraud. DNA evidence confirmed his involvement in all three rapes.

Legal and Public Outrage

The case has fueled anger over France’s handling of migrant crime and border security, with critics arguing that Gandega should never have been in a position to commit these attacks. The hospital now faces legal action from victims’ families for failing to protect its patients.

Despite the brutality of his crimes, Gandega was handed a 17-year prison sentence, a ruling some consider too lenient given the trauma inflicted on his victims.

One victim’s daughter, who was initially misled about what had happened to her mother, only learned the truth through media reports. “This could have been prevented,” she said. “He should never have been free to attack again.”

With growing concerns over violent migrant crime, many are calling for tougher sentences, stricter immigration laws, and mass deportations to prevent similar cases in the future.
