A former Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) contractor pleaded guilty on Wednesday to being a spy for the Iranian government and intelligence officials while in the US between 2017 and 2024. He allegedly gathered sensitive information on American airports and our energy industry for at least seven years.

Iranian spy on US soil
Abouzar Rahmati, 42, is a naturalized American citizen who, at the very least, should have that designation revoked and get the boot for his treasonous actions. He lives in Great Falls, Virginia.
According to the DOJ, Rahmati pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring to act and acting as an agent of the Iranian government in the US without prior notification to the Attorney General. That’s called espionage, and we used to execute people for that.

A former officer with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps
It gets worse. He was a 1st Lt. for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) from June 2009 to May 2010. That is an elite branch of the Iranian Armed Forces that specializes in killing Americans and is designated as a terrorist group by our government.

Court documents show that from at least December 2017 through June 2024, Rahmati worked with Iranian intelligence operatives and government officials on their behalf in the U.S.
During that period, Rahmati met with Iranian intelligence in Iran, communicated with Iranian authorities using a cover story to hide his conduct, obtained employment with an FAA contractor with access to sensitive, non-public information about the U.S. aviation sector, and obtained and provided open-source and non-public materials about the solar energy industry in the U.S. to intelligence officers.
According to the DOJ, Rahmati offered his services to Iran back in August 2017 via a colleague who was a senior Iranian government official. That man used to work for Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security.

He traveled to Iran four months after that to meet with intelligence operatives and government officials. Shockingly, no one evidently noticed or cared. That was when he was tasked with providing Iranian officials with information on the solar industry in the US.
When Rahmati came back to the US in 2018, he was able to get his paws on open-source materials related to the solar industry and hand them over to the office of Iran’s Vice President for Science and Technology.
Downloaded a massive amount of sensitive files
That was bad enough, but far worse was the fact that he downloaded at least 175 GB of files, including sensitive access-controlled FAA documents that were connected to the National Aerospace System (NAS), NAS Airport Surveillance Radar systems, and radio frequency data, according to the DOJ. Rahmati put the files on removable media and took them to Iran in April 2022.
Fox News further reported, “He also provided additional information about solar energy, solar panels, the FAA, U.S. airports, and U.S. air traffic control towers to his brother living in Iran in April 2022, the DOJ added, so his brother could provide the files to intelligence officials on Rahmati’s behalf.”
Treason is obviously a family affair for Rahmati.

Whatever happened to national security and background checks?
This is why we have background checks, but no one seems to know how or wants to use them anymore. More likely, they are simply too lazy, corrupt, or incompetent to employ them. How is it that this guy was not on our radar long ago? He is the very definition of a national security threat.
Rahmati is set to be sentenced on Aug. 26. He could get ten years in prison for acting as an agent of a foreign government, and up to five years in prison for conspiracy. He must have cut a deal, because this is stone-cold treason and should have much more severe consequences.

It’s unknown how Rahmati was caught or why he pleaded guilty unless the evidence was just so overwhelming he had no choice. The US and Iran are currently engaged in tense indirect talks, but it is doubtful that they had anything to do with it.
“The Iranian government continues to target American institutions for infiltration,” US Attorney Edward Martin Jr. for the District of Columbia stated, according to Iran International.
“We will hold accountable anyone who puts our national security at risk,” he commented.
That statement rings a bit hollow. Our agencies and educational system are rife with communist and Islamic spies. They need an enema, and national security needs to be taken seriously once again.
