Many are questioning the silence of New York politicians, noting that a similar incident at a mosque would likely provoke violent responses, street protests, and condemning statements from leaders.
In a shocking attack, a Muslim taxi driver in New York City was caught on video decapitating a statue of Jesus and spitting on it outside a Catholic church in Queens. This incident, captured on surveillance footage, has sparked outrage and raised serious concerns about Islamic intolerance towards Christians and other “unbelievers.”
The disturbing incident occurred at the Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in Fresh Meadows on June 30, 2024. Jamshaid Choudhry, a 44-year-old taxi driver from Hollis, was arrested and charged with criminal mischief as a hate crime and other related offenses.
The Diocese of Brooklyn, which released the footage, reported that the damage to the statue would cost $20,000 to repair. The statue of Jesus had stood outside the church for 42 years, a symbol of faith and devotion for the local community.
The Incident
According to the video, Choudhry arrived at the church in an SUV taxi around 5:30 a.m. He parked, calmly crossed the street, and removed his shoe before approaching the statues of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. Choudhry then began to swat at the heads of Mary and Joseph with his shoe before focusing his attention on Jesus. In the Islamic Middle East, striking something or someone with a shoe is a widely accepted sign of profound disrespect. He then violently hacked at the head of the Jesus statue until it was decapitated and fell to the ground. After committing this act of desecration, he spat on the statue and walked away with his shoe still in hand.
Response and Consequences
The community has expressed outrage and sadness over the desecration. The Diocese of Brooklyn condemned the act, highlighting the statue’s long-standing presence and the emotional and spiritual damage caused by its destruction. Choudhry’s actions have been widely criticized, and he now faces serious legal consequences.
Linking to Previous Incidents in Europe
This incident in New York is reminiscent of similar acts of Islamic religious intolerance and vandalism that have occurred in Europe, often perpetrated by migrants. In several European countries, churches and religious symbols have been targeted in what many see as a broader attack by Muslims on everything non-Islamic (see here, here, here, here, and here). The mainstream media conveniently does not expose the religious motivation behind such crimes. For example, the Qur’an, in verse 47:4, states, “When you meet the unbelievers, strike the necks…” These attacks are not isolated incidents but part of a disturbing trend of Islamic religiously motivated violence and vandalism.
Lack of Political Outrage
Many are wondering where the outrage by politicians in New York is. If a similar incident occurred at a mosque, it is highly likely there would be a violent response, people marching in the streets, and politicians issuing condemning statements. It seems that when attacks on the Christian community happen, they are quietly swept under the rug. This blatant double standard raises serious questions about the leaders’ lack of concern for the Christian community and the control the Islamic community has over those in power.
